samo doesn't sell your data, doesn't show ads, and doesn't use an algorithm to profile you. This page explains what we do store, why, who else sees it, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
samo (samo.world) is run by Luke Dagnall in the UK, who is the “data controller” for your information under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). For anything about your data, email hello@samo.world.
What we store
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address and password (stored scrambled, never in plain text) | To log you in, confirm it's you, and send password resets and account emails |
| Your username, and who invited you | Your page's address; invites keep samo invite-only |
| Everything you put on samo: your page and its look, pictures, songs, shelves, posts, comments, drawings, stars and friends | To show it — most of it is public on your page |
| Private messages | To deliver them. Only you and the person you're talking to can see them, unless one of you reports a message to us |
| When you were last online, and how many times your page has been viewed | “Online now” and the page-view counter on your page |
| The IP address and browser of each device you're logged in on | Keeping your account secure, stopping spam and abuse (for example, limiting how many logins can be tried) |
| Blocks and reports you make, and reports about you | Keeping people safe and enforcing the community rules |
Our legal reasons are: to provide the service you signed up for (your account and page); our legitimate interest in keeping samo safe and working (security, moderation, error logs); and your consent, for analytics cookies.
Who else sees it
We use a few companies to run samo. They only get what they need to do their job:
- Vercel — hosts the website.
- Neon — hosts the database where everything above is stored.
- Resend — sends our emails (it sees your email address).
- Sentry — records errors so we can fix them. We've set it not to collect personal details like your email, cookies or what you typed.
- Google Analytics — only if you say yes to cookies (see below).
Some of these companies are based in the US, so your data may be processed there. They're covered by the UK's data bridge with the US or by standard contract clauses that protect it to UK standards.
Some things on members' pages load from other services when you view them, and those services can see your IP address: YouTube (videos), Apple (song previews and some covers), Bandcamp (its music player), Google Fonts (fonts members choose), and the sites album, film and book covers come from (such as Deezer, Wikipedia and Open Library).
We'll share information with the police or other authorities only when the law requires it, or when someone's safety is at risk.
Cookies
samo uses two kinds:
- Ones we need to keep you logged in and remember your cookie choice. They're always on.
- Google Analytics, which counts visits and which pages are popular. It only runs if you say yes. You can change your mind any time: .
How long we keep it
- Your account and everything on it: until you delete your account.
- Login sessions: 30 days after you last used them.
- Reports: a copy of what was reported is kept for up to 2 years after the report is closed, so we can deal with repeat problems, even if the thing reported was deleted.
- Error logs: up to 90 days.
Your rights
You can:
- see and change most of your information yourself, in your settings;
- delete your account any time from Account & invites — this deletes your page, shelves, posts, photos, comments, drawings and messages;
- ask for a copy of your data, or ask us to correct, restrict or stop using it — email hello@samo.world.
We'll reply within a month. If you're not happy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
You need to be at least 13 to use samo. If you think someone younger has an account, tell us at hello@samo.world and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this in a way that matters, we'll tell members on samo before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
